Anti Aging Skincare Super Ingredient
Let’s delve deeper
Learn everything you need to know about Ectoin, an ingredient to help improve the look and feel of mature skin.
We all want to find the magic bullet that will help us achieve and maintain youthful looking skin. And while there is no one product or ingredient that can entirely fulfil that promise, I want to tell you about Ectoin which may come pretty darn close. Here’s everything you need to know about this powerful ingredient and how it can help improve the look and feel of mature, dry skin.
What is Ectoin?
A naturally occurring molecule in the Extremolyte family (natural substance that occurs in many microorganisms, including certain bacteria, algae, and fungi) with a lot of “antioxidant-like” behaviours. It helps protect skin cells from environmental & UV damage, reduces inflammation, improves skin barrier function, and maintains balanced hydration for soft and smooth skin. It’s thought to protect these organisms from environmental stressors like extreme heat, UV radiation, and dehydration. It has super powerful hydrating, barrier regulating, stabilising, and soothing properties on the skin. In other words, it’s pretty much the must have for mature, dry skin!
How Does Ectoin Work?
Experts believe that Ectoin works by increasing the production of ceramides in the skin. Ceramides are lipid molecules that play a crucial role in maintaining the skin’s barrier function. When the skin’s barrier is damaged or compromised, it leads to increased water loss (a.k.a. transepidermal water loss or TEWL) and a decrease in the skin’s ability to retain moisture. This can make the skin more susceptible to dryness, itching, and inflammation.
But when Ectoin is applied topically, it helps increase ceramide production and improve the skin’s barrier function. This helps lock in moisture and keep harmful irritants and toxins out – resulting in smoother, softer, more hydrated skin. In fact, one study found that Ectoin was able to reduce TEWL by up to 40%!
What Are the Benefits of Using Ectoin?
In addition to its hydrating and barrier protecting properties, Ectoin also has powerful anti- inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. This makes it an ideal ingredient for mature skin types who are struggling with dryness, redness, and sensitivity.
Ectoin is also known for its stabilising properties – meaning it can help protect other active ingredients in a formulation from degradation due to external stressors like light or heat exposure. This makes it an ideal ingredient to use in products like serums or face oils that are packed with high concentrations of other beneficial active ingredients.
