Pigmentation / Sun Damage
Your skin colour is its pigmentation, and is determined by the amount of Melanin contained within your skin cells. Skin pigmentation issues are usually caused by the Melanin production being disturbed. Discolouration of the skin can present itself as darker patches (Hyperpigmentation) or lighter patches (Hypopigmentation), and each will likely have a different underlying cause.
Hyperpigmentation is due to excess production of melanin, and will usually be most apparent on areas of the skin which are more often exposed to the sun. This is because the UV rays trigger the overproduction of Melanin over time, and has lovingly been offered the alternate terms sun spots or age spots. Changes in hormone levels and scarring can also contribute to the development of this condition.
