Face Condition

Droopy Eyelids / Hooded Eyes

The term ‘droopy eyelids’ (medically known as eyelid ptosis), refers to the sagging of the skin of the upper eyelid. The eyes are one of the main focal points of the face and play a huge role in how we communicate with others, as well as displaying facial expressions and in showing emotions.

Ageing is the most common reason we experience some drooping of the eyelids and in most cases begins around our late 30’s to early 40’s. Eyelid ptosis usually first presents itself in a mild form, whereby the crease of the eyelids begins to sit a little lower than in our 20’s. In some rare cases (mostly in people much older) where the condition is advanced, the eyelid can begin to cover more of the eye and therefore can cause impairment to the vision and / or normal function of the eye.

About this condition

Droopy eyelids are normally caused by two common age related factors. One, is where the collagen and elastin in the skin has begun to diminish and the skin has started to lose its ability to contract, collecting as folds in the eyelid area.

The other is due to a depreciation of the levator muscle that supports the eyelids and controls the lifting motion associated with keeping the eyes open. As this muscle becomes less effective, the eyelid may take on a fallen appearance.

Further causes of this condition can be due to: nerve injury (as a result of cataract surgery) trauma, stroke or a stye.

Droopy eyelids can affect both men and women of any age or ethnicity and can be present in either one or both eyes – unilateral ptosis or bilateral ptosis. Drooping eyelids are sometimes also associated with the appearance of a fallen brow. This may occur when the fat pads around the eyes begin to break down and the skin structure can no longer support the weight effectively and the lid of the eye begins to pull the brow downward beyond an acceptable margin.

Whether you are experiencing one or both of these conditions, an appearance that was once joyful and awake, can often become weary and worried looking.

In one way or another, we all consider the way we look, and through non surgical intervention at Nassif MedSpa your eyes can regain their youthful look, framed perfectly by the eyebrow to retain a calm and relaxed appearance of the upper face.
