Gummy Smile Correction

A gummy smile is a term that is used to describe a person’s smile, when too much gum shows above the top teeth. Some people are self-conscious about the amount of teeth and gum that is revealed when they smile, feeling that it doesn’t fit with what can be considered the norm. Gummy smile correction involves the application of toxin (also used in anti-wrinkle injections) to help relax the muscle above the upper lip and restrict it from lifting too high when smiling or laughing.

Also known as ‘excessive gingival display’, a low or uneven gum line can be improved as this treatment restores the natural proportions of the teeth and gums.

There can be a variety of causes for a gummy smile and the experts at Nassif MedSpa will consider all factors during a full consultation prior to treatment. The doctor will examine your muscle movement and smile, as well as any factors that may be contributing to the condition in order to decide upon the treatment plan that will achieve the results you desire.

During the procedure, a small amount of botulinum toxin will be injected on both sides of the face – at the junction of nostril and nose to mouth fold. The toxin works by weakening the lip elevator muscles in the top lip, stopping them from over contracting and being over active.

The relaxed muscle will mean the lip raises less by only a couple of mm, but it will make a big difference, restoring the visual proportions of gum to teeth.

The outcome will need to allow 3 or 4 days to begin developing, as the elevation of the upper lip will gradually become less. Your new smile will be transformed around 2 weeks after the treatment with results tending to last for around 3 – 4 months, when a follow-up procedure will be required.

FAQs

Am I suitable for gummy smile correction?

Gummy smile correction at Nassif MedSpa involves the application of a toxin to the lip elevator muscles. This condition can appear for a number of reasons, with each cause requiring a different approach for correction. The toxin works to relax muscles and is effective for improving a gummy smile that is the result of a hyperactive lip (when the top lip raises too high when smiling or laughing). A full assessment during a pre-treatment consultation will determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

Is gummy smile correction safe?

Toxins have come under much scrutiny over the years, leaving many people doubtful of its safety. This product has been extensively researched and developed, both medically and scientifically, and many studies have found the product to be safe to use for medical and cosmetic purposes – even getting FDA approval.

Will it hurt?

Some slight discomfort may be felt during the treatment as the injections are administered. This can be reduced by the application of a numbing cream, 20 – 30 minutes before the treatment if the patient would prefer. Many of our patients find this procedure to be well tolerated due to the very fine needles that are used and typically require no anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects or risks?

This treatment will not be recommended for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is no evidence to say it is safe to use in these circumstances. Common effects can include minor swelling, bleeding and a headache. These effects are temporary and have usually eased within 24 hours. Other complications, that are rare, will be discussed during your initial consultation and could include: double vision, drooping lips, changes in speech and breathing difficulties.

How much downtime can I expect?

There is generally very little downtime associated with this procedure with many patients able to carry on with their day very soon after treatment.
