Gummy Smile Correction
A gummy smile is a term that is used to describe a person’s smile, when too much gum shows above the top teeth. Some people are self-conscious about the amount of teeth and gum that is revealed when they smile, feeling that it doesn’t fit with what can be considered the norm. Gummy smile correction involves the application of toxin (also used in anti-wrinkle injections) to help relax the muscle above the upper lip and restrict it from lifting too high when smiling or laughing.
Also known as ‘excessive gingival display’, a low or uneven gum line can be improved as this treatment restores the natural proportions of the teeth and gums.
There can be a variety of causes for a gummy smile and the experts at Nassif MedSpa will consider all factors during a full consultation prior to treatment. The doctor will examine your muscle movement and smile, as well as any factors that may be contributing to the condition in order to decide upon the treatment plan that will achieve the results you desire.
During the procedure, a small amount of botulinum toxin will be injected on both sides of the face – at the junction of nostril and nose to mouth fold. The toxin works by weakening the lip elevator muscles in the top lip, stopping them from over contracting and being over active.
The relaxed muscle will mean the lip raises less by only a couple of mm, but it will make a big difference, restoring the visual proportions of gum to teeth.
The outcome will need to allow 3 or 4 days to begin developing, as the elevation of the upper lip will gradually become less. Your new smile will be transformed around 2 weeks after the treatment with results tending to last for around 3 – 4 months, when a follow-up procedure will be required.
