The treatment is administered by injecting micro-droplets of filler into specific areas of the lips, using a very small needle. The smooth gel can be applied just beneath the skin both around the border of the lips or on the mouth itself.

Lip filler helps to add volume to small lips, which produces a more even texture to the skin for a reduced appearance of lip lines (also called ‘smokers’ lines’ or ‘lipstick lines’) and wrinkles.

Am I suitable for lip fillers?

If you are affected by lips that are: smaller than you would like, have a less defined cupid’s bow, have lip lines or wrinkles, are unbalanced in top and bottom lip proportion or are asymmetrical than having lip fillers may be suitable for you. The treatment will be personalised to meet your needs and your suitability will be determined through a thorough pre-treatment consultation. Underlying skin conditions and inflamed skin at the treatment area may mean you will not be recommended to undergo this procedure.

Are lip fillers safe?

Lip fillers contain a specially formulated substance that is kinder to the delicate skin on and around the mouth and is considered to be a very safe method of augmenting the lips. Will it hurt?

The lips can be sensitive and may feel the effects of an injection more than other areas of the face. Lip filler products will often contain lidocaine, a mild anaesthetic that can help to slightly numb the area and alleviate any tenderness that may be felt. During your pre-treatment consultation you can discuss the discomfort that applying lip fillers can incur and you may be offered the option of a numbing cream to be applied before the treatment takes place.

Are there any side effects or risks?

Swelling, redness and slight bruising are common side effects of having lip fillers applied. These effects are often temporary and will settle within 48 hours of having the treatment. If there is a chance that a more serious complication could occur, this will be discussed with you at your one-to-one consultation, including: lumps and irregularities, infection, ulceration and asymmetric lips.

How much downtime can I expect?

Minimal discomfort could be felt for around 24 hours following the treatment. Having lip fillers should not cause disruption to your day, but swelling may cause tenderness when eating and talking. Part of your aftercare will include avoiding touching the lips and applying unnecessary pressure to the lips for a period of around 6 hours.
