Skin Condition

Thread Veins

Also known as ‘spider veins’ or ‘surface veins’, thread veins can develop on both men and women of any age. They are most commonly known to affect the legs, feet and back, as well as on the face when associated with another common concern – Rosacea.

The appearance of thread veins shows small, thin, red or purple strands close to the surface of the skin. They can develop as a singular fiber, or as part of a cluster that forms a network of strands that look similar to that of a spider’s web – hence the name.

About this condition

Around 80% of adults can be affected by thread veins which occur as a result of burst blood vessels in the superficial layer of the skin. Stress or trauma to the skin is one of the most likely causes of this condition, especially experienced by those who find they spend a lot of time on their feet. Ageing and genetics can increase your chance of developing thread veins, as can pregnancy, smoking and weight gain. Thread veins are a concern that is mainly aesthetic, with many people feeling embarrassed by their appearance. However, in some cases where the legs are affected, the perception of possessing an unattractive feature can also be accompanied by aching and a warm / burning sensation.

Treating this concern can often help to improve self-confidence as a clearer tone to the skin can be achieved. At Nassif MedSpa a detailed consultation will take a look at your thread veins; their location and the severity. The possible cause may need to be factored in before an appropriate treatment option and / or plan of treatments can be recommended. Whilst treatments can provide long-term or permanent results, it does not reduce the chance of thread veins appearing in another location in the future.
