Researchers at Stanford University wanted to answer a fascinating question.
Rather than asking whether BBL improved pigmentation or reduced redness, which had already been demonstrated, they asked whether BroadBand Light could influence the biological behaviour of ageing skin.
To investigate this, researchers compared skin samples from younger women with those from women over the age of 50 who had significant sun damage.
The older participants underwent a course of three Sciton BBL treatments before small skin biopsies were analysed using advanced molecular techniques.
The researchers examined the activity of thousands of genes within the skin.
Their findings were remarkable.
They identified more than 2,200 genes that behaved differently in aged skin compared with younger skin.
Following treatment with BBL, over 1,200 of these genes demonstrated expression patterns that more closely resembled those seen in youthful skin.
In other words, many of the biological pathways associated with skin ageing appeared to shift towards a younger pattern of activity.
This was not simply a visual improvement seen in photographs.
It was measurable at a molecular level.
Although this was a relatively small pilot study and further research is needed to better understand the long term implications, it remains one of the most influential publications exploring the biological effects of light based skin rejuvenation.
Does This Mean BBL Changes Your DNA?

The answer is no.
