Laser Hair Removal vs IPL: Which Is Better for Long Term Hair Reduction?

When patients begin researching long-term hair removal options, they usually encounter two main treatments: laser hair removal and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). At first glance, the two can appear very similar, and in some cases they are even marketed as interchangeable treatments. However, from a medical and technical standpoint, they are fundamentally different technologies that behave very differently once they interact with the skin.

The confusion is understandable. Both treatments use light energy, both target the hair follicle, and both aim to reduce unwanted hair growth over time. But the way that energy is delivered into the skin, how selectively it targets the follicle, and how consistently it can be controlled across different skin types is where the real difference lies.

At Nassif Medspa in MediaCity, Manchester, this is one of the most common areas of patient misunderstanding we address during consultation. Many patients arrive having previously tried IPL elsewhere and are unsure why their results were limited, inconsistent, or short-lived. In most cases, the explanation comes down to physics rather than technique: how precisely the energy reaches the follicle, and how much of it is lost or scattered along the way.

To understand this properly, we first need to look at what the treatment is actually trying to achieve at a biological level.

How Hair Growth Responds to Light-Based Treatment

Hair grows from a structure beneath the skin known as the follicle. Inside this follicle is a pigment called melanin, which gives hair its colour. This pigment is not just cosmetic; it plays a key role in how laser and light-based treatments work.

When light energy is absorbed by melanin, it is converted into heat. That heat travels down the hair shaft and into the follicle, where it disrupts the cells responsible for producing new hair. This process is known in dermatology as selective photothermolysis, which simply refers to the selective destruction of a target (in this case, the follicle) using light-based heat energy.

The critical factor is selectivity. The more precisely energy can be absorbed by the hair and not the surrounding skin, the more effective and safer the treatment becomes. This is where the distinction between laser and IPL begins to matter in a meaningful way.

What Laser Hair Removal Actually Is

Laser hair removal uses a single, controlled wavelength of light that is designed to target a specific structure within the skin. Because the wavelength is consistent and focused, it can be carefully selected depending on the patient’s skin type, hair colour and treatment area.

This allows practitioners to control not only where the energy is delivered, but also how deeply it penetrates and how selectively it interacts with pigment in the hair versus pigment in the skin.

At Nassif Medspa, we use the Cynosure Elite+, a medical-grade dual-wavelength system that allows this level of control to be adjusted in real time depending on the patient in front of us rather than relying on a fixed “one setting fits all” approach.

What IPL Actually Is (and Why It Behaves Differently)

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, but despite the name, it is not a laser. This is an important distinction because it changes how the energy behaves once it enters the skin.

Instead of using one precise wavelength, IPL emits a broad spectrum of light. Think of it as multiple wavelengths delivered at once, rather than a single controlled beam. Filters are used to narrow this range, but even with filtering, the energy remains far less specific than laser technology.

The consequence of this is that IPL energy spreads more widely in the skin. Some of it is absorbed by the hair follicle, but a significant portion can also be absorbed by surrounding tissue or lost as scattered energy. This reduces efficiency at the target site and can make results more variable between patients.

This is why IPL can sometimes appear to work well in some individuals but deliver only modest or inconsistent results in others. The outcome depends heavily on how efficiently enough energy reaches the follicle during the active growth phase of the hair cycle.

Why Precision Is the Defining Factor in Results

The effectiveness of any hair removal system is not simply about whether it produces heat, but where that heat ends up.

With laser systems, energy is delivered in a controlled and predictable way. This means more of the energy is concentrated in the follicle where it is needed.

With IPL, energy is distributed across multiple wavelengths, meaning the treatment area receives light energy more broadly rather than selectively.

Over a full treatment course, this difference in precision often translates into very different clinical outcomes. More precise targeting generally leads to more consistent follicular damage, which in turn leads to slower regrowth and greater long-term reduction in hair density.

Why We Use the Cynosure Elite+ in Our Manchester Clinic

At Nassif Medspa in MediaCity, Salford Quays, we use the Cynosure Elite+ because it allows us to work with two medically established wavelengths within a single platform. This gives us the ability to adjust treatment in a way that is tailored to each individual rather than applying a standardised protocol.

The first wavelength, Alexandrite 755nm, is highly effective at targeting melanin in the hair. Because of its strong affinity with pigment, it is particularly effective for patients with lighter skin types and darker hair. It allows efficient energy absorption directly into the follicle, which is why it is widely regarded as one of the gold-standard wavelengths in laser hair removal.

The second wavelength, Nd:YAG 1064nm, behaves very differently. It penetrates deeper into the skin and bypasses much of the superficial pigment. This makes it significantly safer for darker skin tones, where melanin in the skin itself can otherwise compete with the hair for energy absorption.

The ability to switch between or combine these wavelengths is what allows modern laser systems to treat a much wider range of patients safely and effectively compared to older technologies or single-modality devices.

Why IPL and Laser Cannot Be Considered Equivalent

Although both treatments use light energy, they do not interact with the skin in the same way, nor do they deliver energy with the same level of precision.

Laser systems are engineered specifically for selective targeting of hair follicles. IPL devices are more generalised light systems that have been adapted for cosmetic use.

This distinction becomes clinically important when considering long-term outcomes, particularly for patients who require significant reduction in hair density or who are treating areas prone to irritation such as the bikini line, underarms, or face.

Hair Reduction Outcomes: What Actually Happens Over Time

Across a full course of treatment, laser hair removal typically produces progressive changes rather than immediate removal. Hair tends to become finer, lighter, and slower to regrow. Over time, the density of active follicles decreases, which leads to smoother skin and reduced need for ongoing maintenance.

IPL can also produce hair reduction, but outcomes are often more variable and may require more sessions or ongoing maintenance depending on the individual’s response.

It is also important to understand that both treatments are influenced by the hair growth cycle. Because not all follicles are active at the same time, multiple sessions are always required regardless of technology used.

Final Clinical Perspective

From a clinical standpoint, IPL and laser hair removal are not interchangeable treatments. They may share a similar goal, but they achieve it through very different mechanisms, with different levels of precision and predictability.

For patients seeking more consistent, medically guided long-term hair reduction, laser hair removal remains the more advanced option due to its ability to deliver controlled energy directly to the follicle.

At Nassif Medspa in Manchester, we use the Cynosure Elite+ system because it allows us to tailor treatment to individual skin and hair characteristics while maintaining a high standard of safety and effectiveness.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this clinic for the very first time, and I cannot express how impressed and grateful I am for the entire experience. My first treatment was a hydrofacial with Alice, and from the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by Elisha. She was so kind and made me feel comfortable right away, which instantly set the tone for a wonderful visit. The clinic itself is stunning—beautifully designed, clean, and with such a relaxing atmosphere that it truly feels like a luxury retreat. Alice, who carried out my hydrofacial, is an incredibly experienced therapist and also one of the kindest people I’ve ever met in a treatment setting. She explained everything clearly, was so gentle and professional throughout, and really took the time to make sure I was comfortable. The treatment left my skin absolutely glowing, and I could immediately see and feel the difference. Three weeks later, I returned for fractional and BBL laser treatments, and once again, I was welcomed with the same warmth and professionalism, this time by Amanda. She is incredibly sweet, polite, and attentive, and she made me feel completely at home throughout the process. These were treatments I had been considering for a long time, and I had spent quite a while searching for the right clinic where I would feel confident and cared for. I am so glad I found this place—it exceeded all of my expectations. The results have been fantastic, and I am truly thrilled with the improvement in my skin. Beyond the treatments themselves, what makes this clinic stand out is the team. Alice’s expertise and kindness, combined with Elisha and Amanda’s warm and welcoming nature, made me feel so valued and looked after. Everyone I’ve interacted with has been genuinely professional and caring, which makes such a difference when you are trusting someone with your skin and well-being. I am so happy and thankful to have discovered this clinic, and I will absolutely continue to come back. For anyone who has been searching for highly experienced therapists, excellent results, and a luxurious experience from start to finish, I cannot recommend this clinic enough. Thank you 💫🫶🏼✨🥰

After receiving my initial consultation, I knew I was in safe hands. Their knowledge and understanding of the various treatments available is the most apparent from the outset. They are truly professional; the staff are most welcoming, kind and helpful. The clinic is beautiful without feeling intimidating; I understand it is identical to Dr Naasif’s LA clinic, right down to the same artwork. No pressurised selling techniques, just a feeling of reassurance. - Sue

WOW what an amazing experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by Elisha who is so warm and friendly. I was put at ease straight away. Amanda was amazing. Talked me through everything and no question was too much trouble to answer (and there were a lot). She even suggested removing a mole that was close to my eye. Natalie who did the treatment was awesome too. Kept asking if I was ok and informing me every step of the way what was happening and what she was going to do. I had the BBL X HALO which after numbing was more or less pain free. Best medical spa I have been to
